Defending the CAN bus Part 4: CAN-HG

Episode 3 of this Defending CAN series discussed security gateways.
This fourth episode describes hardware protection of CAN using the new CAN-HG augmentation of the CAN protocol. The episode describes how CAN-HG provides both authentication and protection against denial-of-service attacks directly in hardware.

There is a demonstration of this plus a demonstration of how CAN-HG can carry 104 byte payloads hidden inside 8 byte classic CAN frames. CAN-HG is useful not just for protecting CAN but also for supporting the next generation of applications that have higher bandwidth requirements but also need backward compatibility with CAN 2.0 hardware to run on the same wiring as existing devices.
